Matakohe Midweek Ride Review from RC Luppo
I took the ride as Kevin got held up in the hikoi protest and couldn't cross the harbour bridge. After I spoke with Kev who said he would meet us at Matakohe, 5 bikes, with 2 new members, departed NAHD at 10.30 with 2 pick-ups at Z Silverdale, making it 7 bikes. We all donned our wets as the rain looked threatening. We rode out through Dairy Flat, Waitoki and up SH16 with a regroup in Wellsford, then up SH1. Kev called as we passed through Te Hana and said he had only just crossed the harbour bridge, so he turned around and headed home.
We turned left onto SH12 at the bottom of the Brynderwyn making our way to Maungaturoto, Paparoa and onto our destination of the Gumdiggers Cafe at Matakohe. The expected rain was a no-show with dry roads practically all the way and it was actually sunny after Wellsford, so much for Bergins rain radar ap lol. After refreshments and casual conversation, we headed home.
Most of us had taken our wets off, but I left mine on, lucky, as we got a good dousing of rain coming out of the dome and all along the Puhoi expressway and didn't let up until after Silverdale. Thanks to Darren Craig for TEC duties.

Rangiriri Ride Review from RC Joe90
As the week progressed the weather forecast went from cloudy, to sunny, to showers clearing in the afternoon. This meant having an alternative in mind as my intended route would not have been practical in the wet.
As it turned out the weather was very nearly perfect. A little bit windy in places but that had dried out the roads from the morning showers.
After sorting out those intending to ride from those shopping at the sale, 16 bikes left Auckland Harley Davidson for the run south to the Rangiriri Hotel. Traffic south on the motorway was very good, which couldn’t be said for the northbound traffic. Which was jam packed from Manukau back the bottom of the Bombays. We left the motorway at Mercer and crossed over to Highway 22, then ambled south before turning left toward Huntley. Then left again to take us back north toward the Glen Murray/Rangiriri Road. A very pleasant cruise in the sunshine with virtually no traffic.
A big thank to Luppo for being tail end.

Laid Back Coffee Cruise Ardmore Review from RC Bugsy
Hi Guys,
Casual Coffee Ride Sun 17 Nov 2024
Despite the fact that there was an All Black test this morning, and my Mum had already called me an idiot for organising a ride when there was a test on, we had 15 bikes and 17 people head off from Columbus Coffee, Ellerslie to head to the Ardmore Cafe at the Ardmore Airport. This didn't include the few last-minute cancellations I received. It was great to see three new members, a guest in the process of buying his Harley and of course everyone else who came along.
Despite the forecast originally being dry with some cloud, most arrived having had a shower or two or rain proper. With this in mind, a great turnout.
The weather south of where we were heading had been fining up until we got closer to our departure time (of course) so the ride was a mixture of fine spells and showers, wet & dry roads.
The ride got off the motorway at Redoubt Rd, before heading to Ormiston, then around to Clevedon, Clevedon back roads before heading up and over past the Papakura Water Treatment Plant, then on to the Ardmore Airport and the Cafe.
We had it all - motorways, rural straight and windy roads, road works, the usual crap road conditions and animals.
Firstly two loose dogs on the shoulder of the motorway causing traffic to slow, Two horses & riders with two dogs out the back of Clevedon forcing the group to stop and wait for them to pass.
Sadly, there was also a duck that appeared to be either stunned or injured on a windy steep section of road.
Everyone arrived safely at the Cafe, which has a wonderful view of the runway, and we even had a couple of small planes park up right in front of us.
Thanks to Steveo as TEC and Joe for helping from the middle and especially to everyone who came along. I hope you enjoyed the run.
Cheers, Bugsy

Join Us in Supporting Michelle’s Fight Against Cancer
Michelle and Martin van den Dungen (fondly known as "Dutchy" in our community) have been cherished members of the East Coast HOG Chapter for years, contributing so much to our riding family.
Last year, Michelle received a terminal cancer diagnosis, and the cost of her essential treatment is overwhelming—approximately $10,000 per month. In their determination to fight this battle, they’ve exhausted personal resources, and now they are preparing to sell their home with Marty now a fulltime caregiver for Michelle.
In solidarity, we’ve sought their blessing to organize a fundraising ride and BBQ on November 30, 2024, starting at the East Coast Harley Dealership. This is a chance for our riding community to rally together for Michelle.
Here’s how you can help:
-
Donate directly through their GIVEALITTLE page: Michelle’s Cancer Battle (https://givelittle.co.nz/cause/michelles-cancer-battle).
-
Join us at the fundraising BBQ at the East Coast Harley Dealership at 10:30am on November 30, 2024.
-
Ride with us to Matata! Stands up at 12:30pm.
Every dollar raised from the BBQ and the ride will go directly to Michelle and Martin.
Let’s come together, not just as a riding community, but as a family, to show Michelle and Martin that they’re not alone in this journey. Please mark your calendars, donate, and share this post far and wide.

What Our Chapter Can Offer You If You Are A Less Experienced Rider
The Auckland Chapter is here to foster members to Ride and Have Fun. We have a
number of options as listed below. We encourage all members to join in, with the caveat
that they are able to ride comfortably at the posted speed limits applicable on the ride. As
we are not licensed instructors, we cannot be there to teach how to ride, but to provide a
safe environment for all our members.
What we can and do offer.
In all cases, check out the event calendar on Member Jungle (MJ) for full details.
- Sunday morning Laid Back Coffee rides – This ride offers a shorter distance at a slower pace with riders of a similar level of experience to you. It provides an opportunity to meet possible “riding buddies“ and to experience the camaraderie that is part of our Chapter culture.
- Opportunities to find like-minded people and other riding buddies.
- Occasional Sunday brunch events - these are not so much a ride, but again an opportunity to socialise and meet other Chapter members at all levels. Also, we encourage you to come along to Chapter Nights. This is another opportunity to meet other members, find out about Chapter events and locate riding buddies.
- Pathways to obtain training and rider skills :
CRIB (Chapter Riding Information Briefing) – This short Saturday morning
session gives you the information you will need on how to ride with the Chapter. Important
protocols such as staggered formation riding and corner marking etc are explained.
Riding Courses - Our safety officer will provide information, pathways and
links to promote riding courses such as the ACC Ride Forever programmes e.g. Pro Rider
bronze and silver courses. These courses are ideal for learning a variety of techniques to
help you not only to enjoy your riding but be safer on the road. Once you learn the skills
you can then spend time on your own (or with your riding buddies) practising them and
gaining more confidence, so that eventually you can handle one of our group rides. Chat
with other Chapter members to see what suits and be ready to ride and have fun.
What Level Do You Need to Reach Before Joining A Group Ride
Riding in a group may be a new experience for you. That is why the CRIB meeting is so
important as you will learn the way a HOG ride is organised, see the notes above. Riding
is all about confidence and we want to help instil that in our membership, and another
reason we promote the Ride Forever courses, as none of us are perfect. Please feel free
to talk to any of the Road Captains, or any other committee member if you have any
questions about group rides. We want as many riders as possible to enjoy the
camaraderie, to reach our destination safely, and then return home.
If you feel your level of ability and confidence is to a point where you want to “graduate“ to
say a Saturday afternoon ride, you need to be able to consistently keep to the legal speed
limit applicable to the various roads the ride will traverse.
If for any reason you come on a ride and you are unable to keep up, as we only have a
certain amount of time available, the Road Captain may not be able to wait for you.
However, if that were to happen, you would always be welcome to make your way directly
to the venue at the end, at a speed you are more comfortable with. Pre-ride briefings
and/or a chat with the Road Captain/Tail End Charlie can help you understand what is
happening.
There is nothing as unpleasant or potentially dangerous than feeling you have to keep
up with others. It is important to at all times ride your own ride and not someone elses ride.
Remember to Ride and Have Fun.
