Mid Week News - 03/04/2024

By The Membership Officer
kiaora! HOG Auckland Chapter, welcome to the Midweek News
Note from the MO.
My apologies for not having Midweek news last week as I was away for the Gathering in Taranaki and did not return to Auckland until late Wednesday. Fortunately, it was a Make Your Own Ride for the Easter holiday period. In all instances, if Midweek News is not available, please refer to the Events Page on Member Jungle or our Website.
The weekend before was the Chapter ride to Beach Hop Whangamata with our head road captain and only 3 bikes turning up. It didn't help that the weather forecast was dire with rain in places, but as normal, there were big crowds there.
Thank you to our members who continue to renew their memberships, with chapter membership at 230. However, 32 of you have expired since 31 March with at least 7 of you being long-term members. I have deactivated and deleted 10 members that expired over the last 3 months. Thank you for being an Auckland Chapter member. Please check your HOG.com subscriptions as some of you have lapsed there also.

The Gathering Review Pt1 from the MO
The weather was perfect for riding as Diona and I headed off down SH1 on Tiger and D'mon Glide, leaving home at 9am. To avoid the mayhem of road works at Rangiriri, we exited at Hampton Downs and cruised along Whangamarino to Rangiriri bridge where we saw the massive queues on SH1. We crossed the mighty Waikato river and made our way through to Huntly with a short stop at Ngaruawahia. We then carried on to SH39 to Whatawhata where we picked up a rider joining us on his Hayabusa, then through to Otorohanga and SH3 to our fuel stop at TeKuiti. By now, we had seen many riders heading in the same direction. We made good time through to Awakino pub for our lunch break with a coldie and huge whitebait fritters. A few other riders from Rotorua region joined us shortly after. With bellyfull we blatted off towards Taranaki passing through Mokau to the twisty hills of Mt Messenger where we were lucky enough to pass all the queues and have the road to ourselves. We then came upon a long queue of stopped traffic which I had also noticed no opposing traffic coming the other way. We made our way to the front where I asked the driver behind us how long they had been waiting. "half hour" but as fortune would have us, we got a green light only after about 5 minutes, so Dee and I had the whole road to ourselves once again, passing the long queue on the other side. We would soon be in the view of the coastline and could see Mt Taranaki poking his head out above the clouds surrounding him. We arrived at our accommodation about 4pm and after settling in we made our way about 900m up the road to the Treehouse Bar & Bistro where the Gathering was being based. There were maybe about 100 people there as well as 4 Auckland chapter members, Gaz, Shirley, Hunjah and Gordon, so that was great. However, we did think there would have been more but most of the hoggies there were from Central Districts and Wellington HOG Chapters. We caught up with organiser Evan and a few others we knew and of course met new riding mates. We enjoyed the evening of conversation, laughing and banter, being entertained by 2 bands, raffles and a great menu before heading back to our motel to retire for the night, where also quite a number of riders were staying, including Gaz and Shirl. Dee and I had an awesome fun ride with great open roads, spectacular views and beautiful warm weather, topped off with a great evening of fun, drinks, food and music, however that was all about to change. Stay tuned for Pt2 next week.

The Good in the Hood program at Z Sylvia Park. If anyone is using this station and felt so inclined could they select Auckland Whanau Special Needs Support Group, another charity that Trevor and Joy from MDN are part of.
MDA and MDN Explained
As a registered charity, we rely almost entirely on voluntary donations from the general public, trusts and other businesses/organisations to provide specialist information and practical support to individuals and whanau with lived experience of rare neuromuscular conditions. The Auckland Harley Owners’ group have been a huge support to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDN) for many years.
We have three regional branches based throughout the country that are supported by the National Office based in Auckland, one of those branches been MDN and we cover the area from Kaitaia to Taupo.
Our logo is a person shown in the form of DNA. This double helix represents the genetic component to many of our conditions and reflects our strong commitment to families and the acknowledgement of whakapapa or family histories, which are woven through the stories of our members. We believe in strengthening and supporting both individuals with neuromuscular conditions, their whanau and their communities of support.
A lot of our support we give to members is based on an outreach service via our Fieldworkers, information on the rare conditions we cover and also events that members can attend and network with others travelling the same journey as themselves.
The Auckland Harley Owners Group have been long-time supporters of MDN and attend many of our events and get involved with our branch.
